In the year 1988, the Pay Research Bureau published its report on review of PAY AND GRADING STRUCTURES AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR. In order to safeguard the interests and to promote the status of engineering profession, and also to enable excellence in the delivery of effective engineering services in the public sector, the need to form an association was strongly felt. The Union of Professional Engineers was created, which re-grouped engineers employed by the Government of Mauritius, including para-statal bodies. Given the specificity of Engineers in the public service, shortly afterwards the Government Professional Engineers' Association was created. It can be said with much pride that the Association has played a major role in re-vitalizing the status of Engineers and most of its representations to the Government have been given due attention. In the GPEA, the Engineers now have an adequate structure whereby they can exercise their rights to negotiate for better and better working conditions. |
